"Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck

Although Steinbeck's 100 page novel "Of Mice and Men" may seem short, don't let this be deceiving. This book dives into a multitude of topics that parents may perceive as controversial, including graphic language, rape, death, etc. Other themes that were prevalent throughout this story was the aspiration towards a dream, and the many difficulties that may lay ahead. Aside from dreams, lonliness seemed to be another theme that was expressed through one of the main characters - and how he deals with it.

Even though this novel has won a variety of awards, teachers should use caution whenever they assign decide to assign this book in their classes. I believe that this book is most beneficial for students in high-school considering the controversial themes and Steinbeck's more advanced rhetorical style.
